" vitamin D protects the body from diseases like multiple sclerosis, rickets (in the young), tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type 1 diabetes" - звучит шибко подозрительно. Тип 1 - наследственный, витамины ни при чем, насколько мне известно.

You can find there all effects, and diabetes is not listed among major affected matters (so you are right).

However, there were some studies (on diabetes included), and some of them were controversial, so sentence you found at the beginning could come from one of these studies.

The effects of vitamin D supplementation on health are uncertain.[6][14] A 2013 review did not find any effect from supplementation on the rates of disease, other than a tentative decrease in mortality in the elderly.[15] Low vitamin D levels may result from disease rather than cause disease.[15]
A United States Institute of Medicine, (IOM) report states: "Outcomes related to cancer, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, diabetes and metabolic syndrome, falls and physical performance, immune functioning and autoimmune disorders, infections, neuropsychological functioning, and preeclampsia could not be linked reliably with calcium or vitamin D intake and were often conflicting."[7]:5 Some researchers claim the IOM was too definitive in its recommendations and made a mathematical mistake when calculating the blood level of vitamin D associated with bone health.[16] Members of the IOM panel maintain that they used a "standard procedure for dietary recommendations" and that the report is solidly based on the data. Research on vitamin D supplements, including large scale clinical trials, is continuing.[16]

I have long interesting story with Vitamin D, which was prescribed to my daughter. When I went to wiki, to double check what kind of dose she is prescribed, I found, that during last 50 years medical authorities increased values for "normal" level of Vitamin D in blood several times. I still can't get it, my pediatrician could not be of help. I sort of read with relief just now, that "Some researchers claim the IOM was too definitive in its recommendations and made a mathematical mistake when calculating the blood level of vitamin D associated with bone health.[16]" - Because I feel the same.
