Rye pays over $100G to 134 school workers

RYE — The school district's $36.7 million payroll for 2008 included 134 employees earning more than $100,000, an average administrator salary of $143,359 and a head custodian who was paid more than most teachers.

The information was released to The Journal News through a Freedom of Information Law request, as part of a broader effort by the newspaper to collect and publish salary figures for municipalities and school districts.

Superintendent Edward Shine was the Rye district's highest paid employee, earning $268,623 to oversee a 3,100-student district. That was slightly more than Yonkers Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio, who earned $266,000 in 2008 to manage a district with 25,000 students.

Meanwhile, the average Rye teacher made $83,181, according to an analysis of payroll records.

Head custodian Angelo Morganti raked in $141,607, which came close to the district's highest paid teachers — William Schrammel at $143,701 and Dino Garr at $141,741.

Messy wrangling over the teachers' contract, which expired in 2007, has created a much-publicized division between teachers and the district. Teachers have argued they want compensation comparable to other districts, while school officials have said the union shot down several fair offers that didn't burden taxpayers.

"I don't begrudge anyone for the salary they earn," school board President Joshua Nathan said, but "my only concern about the salaries is in connection with the economy we have."

Nathan called Rye teachers and administrators "among the best compensated in the county."

Because salaries make up 60 percent to 70 percent of the budget, "no doubt it is something we need to control," Nathan said, noting that the district's top administrators refused raises last year.

"We have great teachers, and the district is attractive to the finest teachers out there, but in this economy, what can the taxpayers reasonably be expected to sustain?" he asked.
