The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy beyond comprehension.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones and the community that has been hit with this horrific act of violence.

But our condolences are not enough. Mass shootings and gun murders have become commonplace in our country because our laws are broken and our leaders have no plan to address gun violence.

Hours after the shooting, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said: "Today is not the day… to engage in the usual Washington policy debates. I think that that day will come, but today is not that day."

We couldn't disagree more.

We say, Now IS the Time to talk about guns.  Now IS the time to prevent more pointless deaths. Now IS the time to Demand A Plan to End Gun Violence.

Sign our petition to President Obama and members of Congress and ask them to act NOW!

To my fellow concerned citizenry,

Thank you.

I'll be honest.  I am hardly an expert in gun control or in writing policy or law.

But I needed to try and do something. Because sitting around crying over lost lives wasn't changing ANYTHING. So I created a petition.  Probably more of a knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy than anything.  And I thought perhaps a couple hundred people would sign and I'd send it off to our Senators and Representatives and President and hope for change.  But it spread.  Like wildfire.

Newtown school massacre reignites gun control debate as politicians call for a law 'to get weapons of war off the streets'

Barack Obama is under intensifying pressure to take the lead in a campaign for greater gun control following the Newtown massacre of young children.

The mayor of New York and leading US senators pressed the president on Sunday to tell Congress to reinstate a ban on assault weapons which are common to almost all recent mass shootings in the US, including Friday's tragedy in Connecticut in which 20 children, aged six and seven, and seven adults were killed.

Michael Bloomberg, the New York mayor, praised the president for his tearful reaction to the deaths but called on Obama, who has faced accusations of political cowardice over his failure to tackle gun control following other massacres, to make the issue a priority.

"It's time for the president to stand up and lead and tell the country what we should do. Not go to Congress and say: what do you guys want to do? This should be his number one agenda. He's the president of theUnited States and if he does nothing during his second term, something like 48,000 Americans will be killed with illegal guns. That's is roughly the number of Americans killed during the whole Vietnam war," said Bloomberg, on NBC's Meet the Press.
