Dec. 16th, 2012 02:57 pmTo my fellow concerned citizenry,
Thank you.
I'll be honest. I am hardly an expert in gun control or in writing policy or law.
But I needed to try and do something. Because sitting around crying over lost lives wasn't changing ANYTHING. So I created a petition. Probably more of a knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy than anything. And I thought perhaps a couple hundred people would sign and I'd send it off to our Senators and Representatives and President and hope for change. But it spread. Like wildfire.
And now I'm writing over 190,000 of you today. I feel a responsiblity to have our voices heard, and once 50,000 people had joined me, I made the promise that I would go to Washington and deliver this petition in person if 100,000 people joined the cause. Well, we've more than done that, and there is a trip in my future to see that all of your voices are heard.
I don't know if we'll be successful. But I'd sure like to try. Because our nation's future is important to me and we don't seem to have much of a future if we can't make our daily lives and environments safe.
With 200,000 signatures, I'll go to Washington to represent 0.00064% of our nation's population. I believe we can do better than that. We must raise our collective voices and insist upon being heard, insist upon action. Write your senators. Write your congressmen and women. Write your president. And please continue to SPREAD THE WORD. SIGN. SHARE. What about 3 million signatures instead of 300,000? ONE PERCENT OF AMERICA.
I don't know 185,000 people. But in under 24 hours, that's how many of you joined me. Imagine how far our reach if we continue to spread the word over the coming weeks!
I also wanted to take a moment to share this article with you. I hope you will take the time to read it. I have long believed and stated that Gun Control is hardly the entirety of the solution. This is of equally vital importance in the national discourse. We have severe mental health issues to address and here is one mother's wonderfully eloquent, moving, provocative and profound insight.
We've come this far.
Please continue to join me to make real and measurable change.
