What Chicago Public Schools budget cuts mean for the district’s best schools

Интересно было бы если кто-то из чикагцев это читает, узнать, как там всё происходит.
В Нью-Йорк Сити тоже полно ужасных школ в очень бедных районах, но вроде бы о больших увольнениях я там не слышала. Наоборот, вечно не хватает учителей.

The past few weeks haven’t been too good for Chicago Public Schools district. First, principals across the entire system found out that their budgets were being cut. Then, the district officially closed 49 elementary schools, and laid off 850 employees in the process. Unlike the budget cuts mentioned earlier, this was expected – the controversy over school closings has been raging for months – but it didn’t make the whole thing go over any better. And then, just last week, CPS fired 2,113 teachers and other staffers atop of that.
